Image Those of you who watched the Republican Convention no doubt remember the euphoric chants of "drill baby drill."

This overly simplistic mantra seemingly suggests that drilling for oil in Alaska will produce an immediate reduction in gas prices for consumers. For some, "drill baby drill" represents the "Fountain of Youth" for our petroleum-based economy.

Image HOW DID IT come to this? This year's state budget gridlock can be reduced to a single adjective: Dysfunctional.

Twenty-two years of failing to meet the constitutionally mandated budget deadline, years of financial gimmicks and borrowing to politically claim a budget was in place, and initiatives passed by the voters to tie the hands of the Legislature there is simply no more room to maneuver.

Ted Kennedy's appearance Monday night could not help but draw on images of Camelot and what might have been had Robert Kennedy not been gunned down 40 years ago. Obama's acceptance speech was the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr's, "I have a dream" address.

Image Each day, as you open the morning paper, it is beginning to feel that today’s local news was no different from yesterday. When did the systematic robbery of eating establishments become a hallmark for crime?

It is mind boggling to fathom innocent Oakland residents must think twice when deciding to eat on Piedmont Avenue, College Avenue, or Grand Avenue—long noted for their diversity and safety.
